The client: Makita is a leading manufacturer of power tools and has a worldwide network of manufacturing plants. Makita (UK) Ltd is the sales outlet for Makita tools.
Number of employees: Makita UK has 100-150 internal employees based at their head office in Milton Keynes, with approximately 60 UK-based field sales staff.

The situation: Makita needed to employ an Area Sales Manager for their field sales team. After trying to recruit for the role unsuccessfully for several weeks using other recruitment agencies, the hiring manager Andrew Farrell was recommended to try Ascendant Recruitment (one of Makita’s preferred suppliers) by a colleague.
As this was a brand new role, finding someone with the right qualities who could step in and make it their own was going to be particularly challenging. The ideal candidate needed to be confident, target-driven, motivated and have experience in demonstrating products to customers. For Andrew, the priority was to find the right person for the job and he was happy to be flexible on timescales if necessary.
The solution: Consultant Sascha Ross took the initial brief from Andrew and made sure she took the time to really understand the type of person who would be successful in the role. Sascha made sure she stayed in regular contact with Andrew throughout her search to keep him updated on her progress and stay up-to-date with any changes to what they were looking for.
Andrew chose to conduct a first round of interviews from Ascendant Recruitment’s office, giving him the opportunity to meet the candidates in a more neutral environment and discuss his feedback with Sascha in person immediately following the interviews.
The result: After two rounds of interviews, Andrew offered the job to Laurel, a candidate introduced by Sascha who impressed Andrew with her excellent attitude and her previous experience which fitted well with the job role Makita was looking for.
