Jobs in Milton Keynes: One of the UK’s top locations

New figures suggest only about half of employees remain committed to their current role in 2025. Another 20% are still undecided. The remaining third are likely to change their job or career during the year.

A city of opportunities
A recent study looked at UK cities offering the best job opportunities for candidates and people planning a career change.
Out of the towns and cities included Milton Keynes scored consistently well in 2024 across all the factors reviewed. These included:

recent salary growth
employment rate changes
unemployment rate
number of job listings
number of businesses
happiness scores
housing affordability.
Milton Keynes has a working age population of 187,700. At the time of the study there were 1360 businesses with over 10 employees in the area. Annual salaries had increased by 1.6% to almost £37,000 which is in line with the national average.
A city for innovation and growth
Milton Keynes is also one of the top cities for innovation and housing growth, according to another report. It shows cutting-edge industries such as hi-tech and artificial intelligence help to drive salary growth. Areas with high pay have twice as many innovative businesses and three times the high-tech jobs of other regions.
As Milton Keynes builds a leading role in these key areas the prospects look positive. It ranks third in the country for new economy businesses, with 56.7 start-ups per 10,000 working age people. Milton Keynes is also one of the fastest growing in the country, with a 2.4% growth in house building in a single year.
There are also plenty of businesses in the advanced manufacturing, logistics and professional services sectors. Major companies in automotive, finance and retail sectors also contribute to a solid local economy.
An employee-friendly city
A review of 30 of the country’s cities found that only Swindon was a more friendly place for employees. Important factors included salary, employment rate and green spaces. The competitive job market and varied career paths appeal to talented candidates. With good public transport and affordable travel, the city is an attractive place for both work and leisure.
Location, location, location
Milton Keynes has strategic links with Cambridge, Oxford, London and Birmingham. It’s one of the fastest growing cities in the UK with plans for over 50,000 new jobs by 2050. With a high proportion of working age residents and vibrant local community it’s an attractive place to live and work.
